In a surprising turn of events, the Federal Government has announced the postponement of the commencement date for the operation of train services on the Port-Harcourt-Aba section of the Port-Harcourt to Maiduguri narrow gauge line to April 2024, according to a report by Findwhosabi News.
Initially slated for launch by the end of March 2024, the Port Harcourt-Aba rail project, a pivotal part of the larger Port Harcourt-Maiduguri rail project, has encountered delays attributed to the contractor handling the project.

Minister for Transportation, Senator Saidu Alkali, expressed regret over the postponement but assured the public of the government’s commitment to delivering the project by April. Alkali directed the contractor to expedite efforts and ensure seamless integration of the rail line with the Port Harcourt and Onne ports in the state.
“This is the second time I am in Port Harcourt for the inspection of the rail line since I assumed office as the Minister of Transportation,” Alkali stated. “They had given us a definite commitment that by April, they will be able to put Port Harcourt to Aba into use.”
While acknowledging the challenges, Alkali reiterated the government’s dedication to completing ongoing projects nationwide. He emphasized the seriousness of the President Tinubu-led Federal government in delivering infrastructure projects for the benefit of all citizens.

Efforts are also underway to finalize funding for the Calabar-Enugu-Abuja standard gauge rail line, with assurances from the Minister regarding the government’s commitment to swift action upon securing financing.
As the government navigates through project timelines, Alkali urged the public to remain patient and supportive, emphasizing the government’s unwavering resolve to improve transportation infrastructure for the welfare of all Nigerians. Stay tuned for further updates on this developing story.
