No fewer than nine communities in Ogun State are currently grappling with electricity outage due to a decrease in power generation from the Egbin power station, as announced by the Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company (IBEDC) late on Thursday night.
Affected areas include the Ogun State capital, Abeokuta, along with Sango, Ota, Ilaro, Ayetoro, Imeko, Mowe, Ibafo, and Magboro within the state.
In a statement released on its social media handles, IBEDC revealed, “Due to the drop in generation from the Egbin generation station, customers in the following communities: Sango, Ota, Ilaro, Ayetoro, Imeko, Mowe, Ibafo, Magboro, Abeokuta metropolis and environs are experiencing a electricity outage.”

The distribution company assured that its technical team is actively collaborating with relevant stakeholders to restore electricity supply promptly. Despite the inconvenience caused, IBEDC apologized to the affected communities.
This recent power disruption follows the announcement made by IBEDC on December 19, 2023, regarding ongoing maintenance at the Egbin electricity Station, resulting in zero load allocation from the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN). This situation left residents of the Abeokuta metropolis in darkness.
The TCN clarified that the power plant’s shutdown in December was necessary to allow the Nigeria Gas Company (NGC) to conduct maintenance on a gas pipeline supplying gas to Egbin Power Station.
On Christmas Day, IBEDC apologized again for the prolonged outage in the Abeokuta metropolis and surrounding areas, while assuring residents of electricity restoration by December 29.

Egbin Power Plant, located in Lagos and reputed as Nigeria’s largest thermal generating station, contributes over 16 percent of the total electricity generated to the Nigerian National Grid. It stands as a crucial powerhouse, supplying a significant portion of electricity to Africa’s most populated country.
