Protest Erupts in Bayelsa as PDP Supporters Allege Election Manipulation in Nembe-Bassambiri

In a peaceful protest on Sunday, hundreds of People’s Democratic Party (PDP) supporters in Bayelsa State took to the streets in Yenagoa, expressing their grievances against what they claim to be manipulated results of Saturday’s governorship election in Nembe-Bassambiri, Nembe Local Government Area.

The protesters, who gathered at the Isaac Boro Peace Park before marching towards the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) office, alleged that the election did not take place in Nembe-Bassambiri and accused the authorities of concocting results from the polling units in the area.

However, their march was halted by armed security operatives stationed at a checkpoint on Swali Road. The security personnel used Armoured Personnel Carriers and patrol vans to block the road, preventing the protesters from reaching the junction leading to the INEC office entrance.

Speaking to reporters during the demonstration, the State Commissioner for Education, Gentle Emelah, asserted that eligible PDP voters in Nembe-Bassambiri were disenfranchised, deeming it unacceptable. Emelah called on INEC and the State Resident Electoral Commissioner, Obo Effanga, to reject results from Nembe-Bassambiri, insisting that voting did not occur in the community.

“We are here to tell the world that the election is not violence. Election is a serious responsibility. Everyone that is having electoral rights ought to cast his vote. But what is happening in Nembe-Bassambiri is not acceptable,” Emelah declared.

The State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Diriyai Dambo SAN, described the incident in Nembe-Bassambiri as “a rape on democracy.” Dambo alleged that the party’s supporters faced life-threatening situations when traveling to Nembe ahead of the governorship polls on November 10. He claimed that balloting was not conducted in Nembe-Bassambiri, particularly in constituencies 2 and 9, and insisted that fake results were written and posted on social media.

Dambo demanded that INEC adhere to the rule of law and urged the commission to ensure free and fair elections, aligning with President Bola Tinubu’s commitment. He emphasized the need for a thorough investigation into the alleged manipulation of election results and called for corrective action.

The protesters expressed their concerns about the potential consequences of allowing the situation to persist, emphasizing their commitment to democracy and the rule of law.
