The Peoples Redemption Party (PRP) has strongly condemned President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s declaration of a state of emergency in Rivers State, calling it unconstitutional and a potential impeachable offense. The party insists that the move, which led to the suspension of Governor Siminalayi Fubara, his deputy, and state lawmakers, is an abuse of executive power that must not be ignored.
Citing Section 305 of the Nigerian Constitution, the PRP argues that while a state of emergency can be declared under specific conditions, it does not give the President unilateral authority to remove elected officials. The party warned that such actions undermine Nigeria’s democracy and set a dangerous precedent for future executive overreach.
The PRP is demanding the immediate reinstatement of Governor Fubara and urging the National Assembly to review Tinubu’s decision. It insists that political disputes in Rivers should be handled through legal channels, not executive interference. Lawmakers have been called upon to determine whether the President’s actions warrant impeachment proceedings, emphasizing the need to safeguard democratic institutions from unconstitutional interventions.
