In a significant gesture of recognition, the Oba of Benin, Oba Ewuare II, has bestowed a royal plaque upon Afrobeats sensation, Rema. This honor was presented to Rema on Thursday during his visit to the Oba’s palace, ahead of his much-anticipated homecoming concert at the Ogbe Stadium in Benin City.
This momentous occasion was part of a series of events celebrating Rema’s contributions to the cultural and musical landscape. Earlier, on Wednesday, Rema joined the Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, at the groundbreaking ceremony for the new Edo Arena. In a move to immortalize the young star’s impact, Governor Obaseki announced that the 6,000-capacity venue would be named ‘Rema Dome’ in his honor.
Governor Obaseki highlighted Rema’s role as a proud ambassador of Benin and Edo State, emphasizing that the Rema Dome is set to become a hub for tourism and international events in Benin. The governor expressed confidence that this new arena would not only attract global stars but also create new employment opportunities for the youth, further boosting the state’s economy.
Rema, whose real name is Divine Ikubor, hails from Benin City and has consistently showcased the rich cultural heritage of Edo State in his music and performances. His recognition by the Oba and the naming of the Rema Dome are testaments to his influence and the pride he brings to the ancient Benin Empire.
