The governorship candidate of the Labour Party in Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes-Vivour, has expressed his rejection of the ruling by the election petition tribunal, which upheld the victory of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu. In a statement he personally signed on Tuesday, Rhodes-Vivour stated that he believes the tribunal judges made a legal error in their judgment, suggesting that a clear constitutional provision in the electoral process was disregarded.
He further asserted his intention to take the matter to the appeal court in pursuit of justice.
Rhodes-Vivour’s statement emphasized, “Having carefully listened to the judgment of the Honourable Judges of the Tribunal, we believe they, like the learned jurist quoted above stated, have erred in law. The judgment of the Tribunal suggests, erroneously in our view, that a clear constitutional provision in the electoral process has no meaning.”
He assured his supporters that the tribunal’s verdict is not the final word on the matter and reminded them of the importance of the appeal process in upholding justice and accountability in a democracy.
Rhodes-Vivour highlighted the significance of democracy and the need for vigilance and resilience in defending its integrity. He stressed that democracy not only involves voting but also safeguarding the fairness of the electoral process. He acknowledged that the law allows governorship candidates to challenge tribunal decisions at the Court of Appeal and even the Supreme Court, and he intends to do so.
In conclusion, Rhodes-Vivour called on his supporters to remain calm, peaceful, and law-abiding while expressing gratitude for their unwavering support.
