In the early hours of Thursday morning, suspected armed robbers, believed to be hoodlums, raided a female hostel at Rivers State University in Port Harcourt. The attackers targeted hostels ‘D’ and ‘C’, located near the school’s back gate, where many female students reside. The incident occurred around 1:45 am and resulted in the theft of mobile phones, cash, and other valuable items. Unfortunately, some of the female students were also reportedly subjected to sexual assault during the raid.
According to a student who spoke with Findwhosabi, around four female students were injured during the attack. The perpetrators were armed with guns and machetes, and they operated for about 45 minutes.
Following the incident, students organized a protest around 8 am, expressing their concerns about inadequate security on campus. In response, the university management took immediate action by closing two entrances to the school to prevent the situation from escalating further.
The State Police Command spokesperson, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, clarifying that while theft occurred, no students were raped. She noted that an investigation is ongoing and that the police have restored normalcy to the campus.
The incident highlights the urgent need for enhanced security measures in educational institutions to ensure the safety and well-being of students.
