“Royal Call: Traditional Ruler Urges Fair Distribution of Palliatives, Cautions Against Politics”

Ogunsanwo’s Message: Collaborate for Fair Palliative Allocation

Epe, Lagos State, August 8, 2023 – In an earnest appeal, Oba Olufolarin Ogunsanwo, the Alara of Ilara kingdom within the Epe Division, has called upon local government chairmen to forge strong partnerships with traditional rulers in ensuring the just distribution of palliatives. Ogunsanwo stressed that the traditional institution holds greater accessibility to the populace compared to the chairmen.

Speaking with the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN), Ogunsanwo emphasized the need to steer clear of politics and biases when allocating palliatives to households in the community. He urged for a focus on the common welfare rather than personal interests.

NAN’s recent report highlighted that the National Assembly’s approval of ₦819.5 billion for the 2023 Supplementary Budget comes with substantial allocations for various sectors. Notably, ₦500 billion has been allocated as palliatives in response to the Federal Government’s decision to eliminate fuel subsidy.

Ogunsanwo, a respected traditional leader, commented on the substantial financial resources provided by the government to support palliative efforts across different tiers. He stated that this funding could serve as a buffer for the hardships faced by grassroots communities.

“The local government must reevaluate their approach and align their priorities,” Ogunsanwo remarked. He cautioned against viewing government funding as an opportunity for personal financial elevation, emphasizing that funds should be used for their intended purpose.

The Alara of Ilara advised local council chairmen to join forces with traditional leaders for a just and accessible distribution of palliatives. While acknowledging an existing relationship between traditional rulers and government tiers, Ogunsanwo called for its reinforcement.

He urged council chairmen to collaborate closely with NGOs, religious institutions, community leaders, and traditional authorities. These collaborations should extend to markets and Community Development Associations (CDA’s) to ensure the fair allocation of palliatives to needy households.

In addressing concerns about the reach of the fuel subsidy palliative program, Ogunsanwo underlined the significance of balanced economic growth through fair distribution. He emphasized its role in establishing an equitable and flourishing economic landscape.

Addressing existing disparities, he emphasized the need for a precise sharing formula to guarantee fairness in palliative allocation to communities. Ogunsanwo emphasized that a transparent and equitable process could showcase the government’s commitment to good governance and benefit all stakeholders.

Such an approach, he argued, would nurture trust, promote inclusivity, and contribute to well-rounded development. He noted that meticulous budget scrutiny, innovative approaches, and attention to detail are vital in achieving equitable distribution and inclusive governance.

Ogunsanwo praised the strategic planning and measures adopted by the present administration led by Bola Tinubu to address prevailing economic challenges. While acknowledging the efforts of Gov. Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration in Lagos State, he stressed the importance of closer collaboration between local government, traditional leaders, and religious institutions at the grassroots level.
