Dmitry Medvedev, Russia’s former president and current Security Council chairman, revealed on Sunday that Moscow has seen a significant surge in military recruitment this year, with approximately 280,000 individuals joining the armed forces since January.
Although Russia hasn’t officially declared a mobilization, often an unpopular move, it has embarked on an intensive campaign to bolster its military ranks as its ongoing Ukraine offensive extends into its 19th month.
Medvedev cited data from the Ministry of Defence, stating, “According to data from the Ministry of Defence, 280,000 people have enlisted in the Russian army on contract terms since January 1.” He further clarified that this group comprises individuals from various backgrounds, including reserves and volunteers.
Earlier in August, Medvedev had reported that around 230,000 individuals had joined the armed forces since the beginning of the year. It’s worth noting that these numbers cannot be independently verified by AFP.
Over the spring, the Russian military has launched an extensive publicity campaign to attract volunteers, utilizing mass online and street advertisements to bolster its ranks.
