Academic and non-academic staff members of Kaduna State University have raised concerns over the non-payment of salaries, claiming they have not received any salary since their employment three years ago. The workers allege exclusion from the state’s payroll, citing the university’s lack of financial autonomy following its integration under the office of the state Head of Service during the administration of former governor Nasir El-Rufai.
Employees, who spoke anonymously, revealed their plight, with one stating they were owed for 22 months. Despite upgrades and confirmations, they claim non-enrollment in the payment system has led to financial hardship, demoralization, and exclusion from the state health insurance scheme.
The affected workers reported filling out salary forms with expectations of payment by December 2023. However, their efforts yielded no results, prompting them to follow up with the State House. The state Head of Service, Hajia Habiba Shekarau, directed inquiries to the university management, emphasizing the university’s autonomous status.

The university’s Public Relations Officer, Adamu Bargo, acknowledged the lack of total autonomy, clarifying that salaries are paid by the state government, not the university. Bargo urged the affected staff to exercise patience, assuring that the university is addressing the issue.
