Salwan Momika, the man known for repeatedly burning the Quran in Sweden, has reportedly been shot dead. His actions in 2023 sparked outrage across Muslim nations, leading to heightened tensions between Sweden and several Middle Eastern countries.
Momika, an Iraqi Christian, was set to appear in a Stockholm court over charges of inciting ethnic hatred. However, authorities confirmed his death following a shooting in Södertälje, where he lived. Reports suggest the attack may have been streamed live on social media. Swedish police have launched a murder investigation into the incident.
His Quran-burning protests had previously led to diplomatic crises, with Iraqis storming the Swedish embassy in Baghdad. Sweden’s intelligence agency had even raised the country’s threat level, calling it a “prioritised target” after the controversy.
