The bill to create the South East Development Commission was approved by the Senate on Thursday.

The commission will be in charge of accepting and overseeing funding from the Federation Account for the restoration and preservation of homes, roads, and other infrastructure damages sustained by the area as a result of the civil war’s aftermath.

The Senate President, Senator Godswill Akpabio, presided over the Committee of the Whole, where the Red Chamber made its judgment while debating the provisions of the measure.

At the Committee of the Whole on December 21, 2023, the House of Representatives unanimously approved the measure for a third reading and forwarded it to the Senate for concurrence. The bill’s sponsor, Deputy Speaker Benjamin Kalu, served as the committee’s chair.

Furthermore, the Commission’s list of duties and responsibilities also includes “addressing ecological and environmental problems that arise from the extraction and mining of solid minerals, exploring oil mineral in the Southeast states, and advising the Federal Government and the member states on the prevention and control of oil spillages, gas flaring, and environmental pollution; liaising with the various companies that extract and mine solid minerals as well as those that prospect and produce oil and gas on all matters of pollution prevention and control.”
