Senate Summons Egbetokun, Pate, Wike Over One-Chance Victim’s Death

The Senate has summoned the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike; the Inspector General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun; and the Minister of Health, Ali Pate, to appear before the committees on Health and Police Affairs. This summons is related to the tragic death of Greatness Olorunfemi, a victim of ‘one-chance’ operators in Abuja.

The Senate also tasked Wike, Egbetokun, and Pate with conducting comprehensive awareness campaigns regarding the Gunshot Act of 2017, which mandates the treatment of gunshot victims and imposes a penalty for anyone who refuses to comply with the Act.

Greatness Olorunfemi was forcibly ejected from a moving vehicle and stabbed by criminals who had robbed her along the Maitama-Kubwa highway. Despite being rushed to Maitama General Hospital, she was allegedly denied treatment for failing to produce a police report, in violation of the Compulsory Treatment and Care for Victims of Gunshot Act, 2017.

Senator Asuquo Ekpenyong presented the motion, condemning the actions of the hospital’s medical personnel and calling for a thorough investigation into Olorunfemi’s death. The majority of senators voiced their support for an investigation, with some calling for the prosecution of the hospital’s management.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio approved a comprehensive investigation into the incident, emphasizing the need for adherence to existing laws to prevent such avoidable deaths in the future.
