Chief Whip of the Senate, Ali Ndume, has voiced concern over the escalating cost of living and food scarcity in Nigeria, highlighting the difficulty some ministers and National Assembly members face in meeting President Bola Tinubu to address these issues. Ndume, along with Senator Sunday Steve Karimi, sponsored a motion to bring attention to the country’s food crisis.
Ndume cited a warning from the World Food Programme that 82 million Nigerians could face food insecurity in the next five years. He emphasized the urgent need for government action to prevent famine and starvation, particularly among children. He drew parallels to the dire situations in Niger Republic and South Sudan, noting that children in Katsina State are already suffering from malnutrition.
“The major problem with this government is that its doors are closed, to the extent that even some ministers cannot see the President, not to mention members of the National Assembly,” Ndume said. He called for President Tinubu to intervene and address the high cost of living and food scarcity. Ndume urged the government to consult with experts and stakeholders to find solutions, warning of the severe consequences if immediate action is not taken.
