Senator Natasha Calls Senate a ‘Cult,’ Accuses Akpabio of Harassment

Senator Natasha Akpoti-Uduaghan has described the Nigerian Senate as a “cult,” alleging that lawmakers fear speaking out against leadership due to potential retaliation. In an interview with the BBC, she also accused Senate President Godswill Akpabio of sexual harassment.

Akpoti-Uduaghan, who was suspended on March 6, 2025, claimed her suspension was an attempt to silence her. She recounted an alleged incident at Akpabio’s residence where he held her hand suggestively and made inappropriate remarks about her missing wedding ring.

However, Senate Deputy Chief Whip Onyekachi Nwaebonyi denied the allegations, insisting that Akpabio never harassed her. He also rejected claims that the Senate was suppressing opposition voices, stating that Akpoti-Uduaghan’s actions in the chamber contradict her claims.
