Former Kano State Governor, Senator Ibrahim Shekarau, is reportedly spearheading efforts to establish a new political party ahead of Nigeria’s 2027 general elections. The proposed party, led by the League of Northern Democrats (LND), aims to challenge the ruling APC and the opposition PDP, criticizing both for failing to meet Nigerians’ expectations in governance.
Dr. Umar Ardo, LND’s National Convener, emphasized the group’s commitment to democratic principles and reforms, citing widespread poverty, insecurity, and institutional decay as driving factors for the move. He revealed plans to collaborate with southern political groups to form a robust and inclusive political platform.
In response, APC’s Bala Ibrahim dismissed the initiative as a non-threat, expressing confidence in the ruling party’s policies and programs to secure re-election in 2027. He urged Nigerians to judge parties based on their manifestos and results.
