Sokoto University: Robbery, Not Bandit Attack

SOKOTO STATE, Nigeria – The management of Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto State has refuted rumors of a bandit attack on the institution’s permanent campus on Monday evening. Instead, they have clarified that the incident was a case of robbery.

Addressing the media in his office on Tuesday, the Vice Chancellor of the university, Prof. Lawal Bilbis, emphasized that the event was a robbery and not an attack by bandits, as had been speculated in certain quarters.

Prof. Bilbis called on the public and parents to remain calm, reassuring them that there is no cause for alarm regarding the security of the students’ lives.

He provided details of the incident, stating, “I was alerted by security officials in the school to an incident, and when I arrived at the mini-mart where the incident happened at about 11 pm yesterday, it was observed that the case was that of a robbery and not a bandit attack.”

He went on to explain that the robbers had stolen two cartons of Maltina drinks and eight phones belonging to students, which were being charged in some of the shops at the mini-mart.

Prof. Bilbis expressed his gratitude to the security agencies and the university’s internal security team for their prompt response to the incident. The police and NSCDC officials were immediately alerted, and they swiftly dispatched personnel to the scene.

This clarification aims to dispel unfounded fears and provide accurate information to the public regarding the incident at the university’s campus.
