The Conference of Speakers from 36 State Houses of Assembly has urged President Bola Tinubu to implement lasting policies to alleviate the economic hardship faced by Nigerians. This call was made in a communiqué signed by its chairman, Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, Speaker of the Oyo State House of Assembly, following a meeting in Abuja attended by 29 state speakers.
The conference emphasized the need for both federal and state governments to adopt sustainable and courageous policies to mitigate the public’s suffering. The speakers acknowledged that recent economic challenges have arisen from the Federal Government’s removal of the petroleum product subsidy and the floating of the exchange rate, which have negatively impacted the populace.
“While the Conference acknowledges the courage of Mr. President in his economic policies taken so far, such as the removal of petroleum product subsidy and the floating of the exchange rate, the unintended consequences of these policies are too harsh on the populace,” the communiqué stated.
Additionally, Hon. Tajudeen Abbas, Speaker of the House of Representatives, represented by Hon. Mark Esset, Chairman of the House Committee on Inter-Parliamentary Relations, highlighted that state legislative autonomy would be a top priority in the ongoing constitutional review, ensuring it receives significant attention.
