Student killed in clash with police as violent protest spread in Senegal

The decision by Senegal‘s President Macky Sall to postpone the country’s presidential elections has sparked violent protests across the West African nation. According to rumors, President Macky Sall unilaterally pushed presidential elections back several months last week.

The suspension happened weeks before the polls, which were originally slated for February 25, 2023.

The president claimed that the measure was essential to settle a disagreement over the eligibility of presidential candidates running for the country’s highest office.
The development provoked violent rallies, with opponents confronting the president and accusing him of undermining democracy.

On Friday, a student was killed in clashes with police in the northern city of Saint-Louis.

Khalifa Sall reported the death of the student at Saint-Louis on social media.

“The hearts of all Democrats bleed at this outburst of clashes provoked by the unjustified halting of the electoral process,” he told reporters.
