Kevin Opara, a 29-year-old solar panel installer from Owerri, Imo State, shared his harrowing experience of surviving a gas explosion with Temitope Adetunji. In January 2023, two weeks after the New Year, a gas explosion left Kevin with physical and mental scars. Here’s his story:
On the Incident: Kevin was preparing to go to work on the fateful day when the explosion occurred. He works as a solar panel installer, and his wife usually helps him prepare for his jobs. The explosion took place in their home in Oshodi, Lagos. Although Kevin doesn’t keep inflammable materials in the house, the gas explosion was caused by a gas stove. Two weeks prior, there had been a similar incident with a kerosene stove due to a mobile phone call. Kevin suspected the phone’s alarm triggered the explosion.
The Day of the Explosion: On the day of the explosion, Kevin was preparing for a solar panel installation job. He opened his toolbox, which contained some liquid substances like spray paint. As he bent down to pick up his ringing phone, an explosion occurred. The blast darkened his surroundings, made him temporarily lose his senses, and left him with severe injuries.
Injuries and Hospitalization: Kevin suffered burns on his legs and had metal fragments embedded in his body from the explosion. His right eye was damaged, and he requires a transplant. He spent two weeks in the hospital and incurred medical expenses exceeding N1 million. He now sends his team to handle installation jobs as he cannot see well enough to work or drive due to impaired vision from the explosion.
Financial Struggles: Kevin’s medical bills and the need for surgery have put him in debt. He needs approximately N4 million for the eye operation and an additional N2.5 million to remove the front layer of his left eye for clearer vision. Surgery for the right eye costs about N700,000, and he needs funds for prescribed medications.
Impact on Mental Wellbeing: While the incident initially affected Kevin’s self-esteem and emotional state, he has learned to accept his situation and find inspiration in others who faced similar challenges. He considers himself lucky to be alive and values the support of friends and family who have helped him during this difficult time.
Lessons and Gratitude: Kevin emphasizes the importance of safety measures, particularly around flammable materials like gas. He advises storing gas cylinders outside the house and avoiding the use of mobile phones near gas or at filling stations. He is grateful for the positive changes in his life, the opportunity to make the most of a second chance, and the deeper sense of purpose he has found.
Cherishing Life: Kevin reflects on how possessions like certificates and passports, which held significant meaning to him, were lost in the explosion. However, he emphasizes that life should always take precedence over material belongings. While he acknowledges the challenges of rebuilding his life without some of these possessions, he remains hopeful and determined to move forward.
Kevin’s story is a testament to resilience, gratitude, and the strength to overcome adversity. His experience serves as a reminder of the importance of valuing life above all else and finding hope even in the face of difficult circumstances.
