The body of a seven-year-old girl was found in a well in the Shasha neighborhood of Akure, the state capital, and the Ondo State Police Command announced on Wednesday that an investigation into her death had started.
Reporters learned that the child, whose family did not want her name to be made public, had been reported missing before her body was found in the well on Monday, many days after her disappearance.
Adunni Azeez, a friend of the deceased mother, informed our correspondent that a neighbor was thought to have been engaged in the regrettable event.
“The family and the mother’s neighbor had been at odds for a while. We’ve learned that she abducted the girl, and her body was discovered in the well in Sasha, Akure, on Ondo Road,” Adunni stated on Wednesday after visiting the deceased’s family to offer condolences.
As of the time of publication, reporters were unable to independently confirm the seven-year-old’s death, but Adunni stated, “Her body was still fresh as of when it was discovered.” The body has been brought to the mortuary by the police, who have also pledged to perform an autopsy. When we went there today, the family was still in mourning.
The young girl had been missing for a few days, according to a second local source. Talks on the streets claim that following her death, she was thrown into the well. Her age was seven years.
Funmilayo Odunlami, the public relations officer for the state police, was contacted by reporters and confirmed that the girl had been reported missing before her body was discovered inside the well.
Odunlami stated that because the inquiry was still underway, she was unable to provide specifics or name the perpetrators of the girl’s death at this time.
“Initially, we were dealing with the situation of a missing individual. The following day, the child was discovered in a well. We can’t say for sure that this is the individual who killed the child or dumped them inside the well; however, the inquiry is undoubtedly ongoing,” the PPRO stated.
She told our correspondent on Wednesday that she had confirmed certain suspects’ arrests, adding, “We have some suspects in custody, but we can’t assume without the investigation.”
