Teacher charged with beating a female pupil

A teacher named David Yusuf, 43, was charged by the police on Tuesday in a Wuse Zone II Magistrates’ Court in Abuja for allegedly whipping a pupil at the Government Girls College in Kuje, Federal Capital Territory.

The defendant, who is allegedly a casual employee of the college, is accused of assault and two counts of causing great bodily harm without justification.
His defense was not guilty.

The case was transferred from the Kuje Divisional Police Headquarters to the Criminal Investigation Department, FCT, for additional investigation, according to the police prosecutor, Mr. Edwin Inegbenoise, who testified in court.

Henry Iortim, the nominal complainant, of the Union Homes Estate in Kuje, according to Inegbenoise, reported the incident to the police.

According to the prosecutor, the complainant said that on June 2, the defendant had assaulted his 16-year-old daughter, a college student.
He continued by saying that the defendant beat the victim with an iron rod during night prep, causing damage to her palm and other body parts.
He added that the alleged offenses violated the terms of Sections 241 and 326 of the Penal Code.

Magistrate Abdulmajid Oniyangi granted the defendant bail in the amount of N2 million with two sureties in the same amount, both of whom had to be residents of the court’s territorial jurisdiction.

Before the prisoner could be released, he directed the court registrar to confirm the addresses of the sureties.

In order to have a hearing and allow the prosecution attorney to introduce witnesses, he postponed the case until November 6.
