The Private Telecommunications and Communications Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PTECSSAN) has called off its planned strike, scheduled to commence on Thursday, following successful negotiations with subcontractors.
In a statement issued by the union’s General Secretary, Okonu Abdullahi, on Wednesday, it was revealed that agreements had been reached with the subcontractors, addressing the issues that led to the planned industrial action.
PTECSSAN had earlier announced its intention to embark on an indefinite strike starting April 4, citing unresolved issues with subcontractors associated with Huawei Technologies Nigeria Ltd.
Among the subcontractors mentioned were Reime Group, Allstream Energy Solutions Ltd., Uppercrest Ltd., Tyllium Nigeria Ltd., and Specific Tools and Techniques Ltd.
The union stated, “PTECSSAN threatened an industrial action effective April 4, 2024, against the undersigned subcontractors to address concerns of her members. This led to a meeting at the union’s secretariat, and the following agreements were reached…”
Key agreements include the recognition of employees’ rights to associate freely with the union and the implementation of health facilities in line with the National Health Insurance Scheme.
PTECSSAN’s demands also encompassed the recognition of the union as the primary negotiating body for workers’ welfare, regularization of employment for members involved in Huawei projects, compliance with pension and health insurance regulations, and initiation of negotiations for a collective bargaining agreement.
Despite earlier challenges in engaging constructively with the Ministry of Labour and Employment, efforts to resolve these issues ultimately led to a resolution, averting the need for industrial action.
With the strike suspended, PTECSSAN emphasizes its commitment to advocating for the welfare of its members while fostering a conducive working environment within the telecommunications sector.
