Nigerian music star Tems has called off her scheduled concert in Kigali, citing concerns over Rwanda’s alleged support for the M23 rebel group in the Democratic Republic of Congo. The Grammy-winning artist announced the decision on X, expressing regret for not being aware of the ongoing crisis between Rwanda and Congo when she initially promoted the show.
Tems, who was set to perform at BK Arena on March 22, emphasized that she never intended to be insensitive to real-world issues. “I simply had no idea this was going on. My heart goes out to those affected,” she stated. Her decision follows growing international criticism of Rwanda’s alleged role in fueling the conflict, with the UK government now considering a review of its aid to Rwanda.
The situation in eastern Congo has intensified as M23 rebels continue their advance, prompting accusations that Rwanda is backing them for strategic control over mineral resources. While Rwanda denies involvement, tensions remain high, with fears of further escalation. Tems’ stance reflects a broader call for global awareness and responsibility in times of conflict.
