Essential oils are strong extracts from plants that keep the natural smell and taste of the plant. Each oil has different chemicals that affect how it smells, gets absorbed, and what effects it has on the body. Fake oils aren’t considered real essential oils.
Scientists have looked into essential oils. In the past, studies suggested that lavender and tea tree oil might cause health problems by messing with hormones. These oils have lots of chemicals,According to (National Institute of Environmental Health Sciences) wanted to find out which chemicals might lead to a condition called prepubertal gynecomastia (breast tissue development in boys).
The NIEHS researchers put pure lavender and tea tree oils, along with some chemicals, on human cell lines in test tubes. These tests showed that certain chemicals in these oils might cause prepubertal gynecomastia.
The study focused on specific chemicals in lavender and tea tree oils. These chemicals were also found in most other essential oils, according to an analysis of 93 oils.
Gynecomastia can happen in boys during infancy, adolescence, and when they’re older. Prepubertal gynecomastia is rare, but some people think boys in this age range might be more sensitive to hormonal changes.
The connection between essential oils and gynecomastia seems to be related to skin exposure, not breathing in the oils. More research is needed to understand the link with aromatherapy.
For girls, it’s hard to tell if lavender and tea tree oils have the same effects as in boys. A case in 2019 reported abnormal breast growth in girls exposed to lavender products, but it went away when they stopped using them.
Tests with different amounts of essential oils and their chemicals showed that as the amount decreased, the hormonal activity also decreased.
