The Federal Controller of Works in Lagos State, Olukorede Keisha, has announced plans for a comprehensive overhaul of the Third Mainland Bridge’s asphalt layers. This decision comes after it was reported that the bridge would be temporarily closed to traffic from October 21, 2023, to October 22, 2023, for palliative works.
Keisha confirmed that the extensive repair work on the bridge will commence in late January 2024. The Third Mainland Bridge is a crucial lifeline for commuters in Lagos and has long been in need of significant repairs. Keisha explained that the repairs would involve a complete overhaul of the asphalt overlay on both sides of the bridge, replacing them with new layers that are expected to last for the next 10 years.
The contract for this project has already been awarded by the federal government, and preparatory works are pending. The repair work is expected to take approximately six months in total, during which one bound of the bridge will be closed for three months before diverting to the other bound. Once the work on one side is completed, traffic will be brought back to that lane, and then the other side will undergo repairs.
This comprehensive overhaul aims to address the long-overdue maintenance of the Third Mainland Bridge and provide a significantly improved road for commuters.
