Threats to Christian Workers in Contemporary Times

In the ever-evolving landscape of contemporary times, Christian workers face a unique set of challenges and threats as they carry out their mission to spread the message of faith and serve their communities.

These challenges go beyond the conventional difficulties encountered in religious ministry. Instead, they encompass a broad spectrum of obstacles that test the resolve and dedication of those committed to the Christian cause.

In this exploration, we delve into the various threats that Christian workers encounter in today’s world, shedding light on the complexities and intricacies of their mission amidst an ever-changing society.

  1. Disinterest: In this context, “disinterest” refers to the growing disengagement of individuals from the gospel work. The challenges of the COVID era have amplified the difficulty of this task, leaving many questioning what the future holds. While the calling of church leaders remains intact, their enthusiasm often wanes.
  2. Division: During the initial stages of the pandemic, church leaders and congregants joined forces, facing an unprecedented challenge together. We exhibited patience and forgiveness, believing that this turmoil would soon pass. However, as the pandemic persists, weariness has rekindled old church and interpersonal conflicts that predate COVID.
  3. Despondency: Discouraged church leaders are not difficult to find, and at times, we need only look within ourselves. When circumstances orchestrated by the adversary steal our inner peace and joy, we are left with little energy to fulfill God’s work. In such instances, our discouragement can become all-consuming.
  4. Diversion: The adversary has always sought to divert our attention away from evangelizing non-believers, nurturing new converts, and establishing healthy churches. He does not object to our “church activities” as long as we veer away from the central mission of glorifying God through the Great Commission. While COVID initially directed our churches to minister to one another and our communities, it may have served as more of a distraction than a genuine focus.
  5. Destruction: In a previous chapter, I discussed the persecution faced by missionaries, but I am equally concerned about church leaders undermining their own ministries through morally questionable choices. Especially during the COVID pandemic, when isolation and frustration have become prevalent, some leaders have found themselves teetering on the edge of a moral precipice. Regrettably, some have even taken the fall.

Nevertheless, it is imperative to remember that the ultimate victory does not belong to the enemy; he is already a defeated adversary. While we await his ultimate defeat, let us not permit him to triumph today. Instead, let us earnestly pray for one another.
