A series of tragic motor accidents along the Abuja/Keffi Expressway has left a grim toll of three lives lost and nine individuals injured. The harrowing incident unfolded around 9 p.m. on a Friday evening and involved no less than eleven vehicles.
Tobi Adebayo, a local commercial driver who regularly plies the route, recounted that the catastrophe was triggered by a heavy-duty truck losing control. The consequences were catastrophic as it collided with one vehicle after another, setting off a chain reaction of collisions.
Adebayo shared, “A trailer going towards Keffi lost control and rammed into a vehicle that also rammed into another, and it kept happening like that. About 11 vehicles were involved in the accidents. Twelve people were rushed to the hospital, out of which three have tragically lost their lives. The remaining nine are still in the hospital, receiving medical attention. The driver of the trailer managed to escape from the scene and fled.”
The situation has prompted a police response, with the FCT police spokesperson, Josephine Adeh, confirming the incident. The police are actively reaching out to the families of the victims and have initiated efforts to apprehend the driver of the runaway trailer.
Adeh stated, “We received a distress call, and our officers swiftly arrived at the scene. They promptly conveyed the victims to the hospital, where three were declared deceased. The nine injured individuals are currently undergoing treatment. Our ongoing efforts include contacting the families of the victims and pursuing the apprehension of the trailer driver.”
This tragic incident serves as a somber reminder of the importance of road safety and the need for stringent measures to prevent accidents caused by reckless driving or vehicle malfunctions.
