Timberwolves’ Edwards’ Statement Amid Abortion Allegations

Minnesota Timberwolves guard Anthony Edwards released a statement on Monday in response to a woman sharing screenshots of alleged text messages between them.

The messages suggested pressure from a contact listed as “Anthony Edwards” to undergo an abortion, along with a screenshot of an alleged $100,000 wire transfer.

Expressing regret, Edwards acknowledged making comments not in line with his beliefs, emphasizing support for women’s autonomy over their bodies. He stated that he is addressing personal matters privately and will refrain from further comments.

“I made comments in the heat of a moment that are not me, and that are not aligned with what I believe and who I want to be as a man,” Edwards wrote on social media. “All women should be supported and empowered to make their own decisions about their bodies and what is best for them. I am handling my personal matters privately and will not be commenting on them any further at this time.”

Before the Timberwolves’ game against the Miami Heat, head coach Chris Finch highlighted ongoing discussions within the organization, emphasizing that the incident doesn’t reflect their values. Finch acknowledged Edwards’ ongoing education and maturity as a work in progress, noting that any conversations on the matter will remain private.

“We will be having ongoing conversations about such things. I think it’s important to state that it’s not reflective of our organization, our values, for sure. And as a young man, it’s clear that the education and maturity of Anthony Edwards continues to be a work in progress. Beyond that, it’s a personal matter for him and any conversations that we have will remain private.”

Despite the situation, Edwards played and was part of the starting lineup against the Heat.

While details of the alleged conversation are unconfirmed, this incident adds to Edwards’ history of social media controversies. In September 2022, he apologized for using homophobic language in a video, resulting in a $40,000 fine from the NBA.

It remains uncertain if the league will take action regarding this recent matter. Drafted as the No. 1 overall pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, Edwards, a first-time All-Star in 2022, is currently maintaining impressive statistics in the 2023 season.
