Tinubu Cancel 40% IGR Deduct From Federal Universities, Talk Say E No Fit Happen Now

President Bola Tinubu, wey be Minister of Education, Tahir Mamman, represent, don cancel di wahala wey follow di deduction of 40% Internally Generated Revenues (IGR) from federal universities across Naija. Tinubu talk dis one for Friday during di 75th Founder’s Day ceremony of di University of Ibadan, say di time wey dem want do am no dey right and e no good for di challenges wey universities dey face.

For im speech as di Visitor to di university, Tinubu yan say, “The 40% IGR automatic deduction policy don cancel. This time no good for dat kind policy, especially as our universities dey find beta time.”

Federal Government bin send letter on October 17, 2023, wey tok say dem go begin di 40% deduction from November 2023. Di letter, wey di Accountant-General of di Federation, Mrs. Oluwatoyin Madein sign, talk say di deduction dey follow di Finance Circular wey get reference number FMFBNP/OTHERS/IGR/CRF/12/2021, wey dem sign on December 20, 2021.

Committee of Vice-Chancellors of Nigerian Universities don yan say dem no gree with di deduction and dem don write protest letter to Federal Government, dey beg dem to change dia mind. Prof. Yakubu Ochefu, wey be di Secretary-General of di committee, talk say government no fit dey ask for 40% of universities IGR wen dem no give dem autonomy. Ochefu add say if government no change di plan, e mean say parents go suffer di consequences as universities dey lack money.

Even di Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) no gree with di arrangement say make public tertiary institutions pay 40% of IGR to federal government. ASUU, for statement wey dem president, Emmanuel Osodeke sign, talk say e go further make universities dey suffer poverty.
