Tinubu Earmarks ₦5 Billion for Research to Boost National Development

President Bola Tinubu has approved ₦5 billion for research in 2024, allocated through TETFund’s National Research Fund. This funding, announced by Education Minister Dr. Tunji Alausa, is focused on addressing national development issues, with public tertiary institutions expected to lead these research initiatives. Alausa shared this plan while inspecting the site for the 2024 TETFund National Research Fair and Exhibition in Abuja, highlighting the administration’s goal to use research to drive growth in critical sectors.

According to Alausa, Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda relies on local research and innovation as a foundation for economic growth. He emphasized that advancing national progress requires effective application of research in areas such as healthcare, energy, agriculture, and technology. By supporting researchers and innovators in these fields, the government aims to create impactful solutions for pressing national needs and strengthen Nigeria’s knowledge-driven economy.

The initiative also seeks to unify currently dispersed research efforts across different ministries, ensuring a more coordinated and effective approach. Alausa confirmed that the National Research Fund will welcome contributions from public, private, and international partners, which would enhance the scope and impact of projects. With Nigeria’s academic talent and natural resources, the government believes the nation is well-positioned to harness research for sustainable development.
