Leaders from the Economic Community of West African States, or ECOWAS, are currently gathering in Abuja to talk about political and economic concerns pertaining to the subregion.
The leaders would discuss how to handle Mali, Burkina Faso, and the Niger Republic’s exit from the group.
After the sub-regional group denounced the unconstitutional takeover of power in those countries, the three countries declared their intention to withdraw from the group.
On Thursday, retired General Yakubu Gowon, the former head of state of Nigeria, made a demand for an expeditious resolution of the numerous concerns endangering the community’s unity.
Gowon stated that the great aspirations of the ECOWAS founding fathers should not be undermined by disputes.
On January 28, the military juntas in Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger declared their plan to leave the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), citing concerns that the organization was growing more dangerous.
The three said that despite the sanctions placed on them, the sub-regional organization did not assist them in their battle against terrorism and insecurity.
ECOWAS disapproved of any protracted democratic transitions and had been pushing for the three countries to return to democratic governance.
In order to resolve their issues with the community, the offended nations have been advised by the ECOWAS Mediation and Security Council to give priority to discussion and reconciliation.
