President Bola Tinubu is set to meet with Organised Labour in Abuja on Thursday to discuss a new national minimum wage for Nigerian workers. This follows his announcement during the Democracy Day speech on June 12, 2024, that an executive bill on the minimum wage would soon be sent to the National Assembly.
The meeting, scheduled at the Aso Villa, will include leaders from the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC). President Tinubu will consider proposals ranging from the government and private sector’s ₦62,000 to Organised Labour’s demand for ₦250,000.
Despite recent delays, Trade Union Congress President Festus Osifo emphasized that negotiations are ongoing with all stakeholders, including the Nigerian Governors Forum and the Organised Private Sector. Osifo reaffirmed Organised Labour’s stance on the ₦250,000 minimum wage demand, citing progress made since negotiations began in January 2024.
The discussions aim to reach a consensus that addresses workers’ welfare amidst economic realities and stakeholders’ concerns.
