President Bola Tinubu emphasized the importance of peace in African states to maximize developmental opportunities during a meeting with the Chairperson of the African Union, Azali Assoumani, on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly in New York. He pledged Nigeria’s support to the AU’s efforts to resolve violence and instability in countries like Sudan, Niger, Burkina Faso, and Mali. Tinubu highlighted the AU’s role in securing consensus positions for Africa on global economic and socio-political relations. He called for embracing freedom and constitutional order for sustainable development and expressed Nigeria’s commitment to collaborating with the AU.
Assoumani, the Chairperson of the African Union, acknowledged Nigeria’s role in securing peace and prosperity in Africa. He stressed the importance of stability for developmental partnerships and expressed Comoros’ desire to learn from Nigeria’s experience in diversity management, electoral officiation, and economic growth. Additionally, President Tinubu welcomed the Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation, Hissein Taha, and highlighted the strategic role of the Islamic world in promoting peace and development in Africa and globally. He emphasized the need to respect Allah’s choice of leaders and expressed readiness to collaborate with Taha and the OIC in uplifting Nigerians and Africans. Taha praised Tinubu’s efforts in bringing African states together and invited him to participate in the OIC Heads of State Summit.
