President Bola Tinubu has directed a comprehensive inquiry into the alleged N585 million scandal in the Federal Ministry of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation. The President has vowed to “decisively punish” those involved in any breaches and infractions revealed during the investigations.
The directive comes in response to growing anger over the alleged breach of the Federal Government’s financial regulations. The controversy revolves around a leaked memo by the Minister of Humanitarian Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Betta Edu, instructing the Accountant-General of the Federation to pay N585 million into a private bank account.

Several groups and individuals, including the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), Femi Falana (SAN), and civil society groups, have demanded an unfettered probe into the matter.
The media assistant to the minister claimed that the payment was legal within the civil service, but the Accountant-General of the Federation denied honoring the request. Tinubu’s directive emphasizes the government’s commitment to transparency, accountability, and ensuring that public funds are utilized effectively and efficiently.
The statement warns the public against spreading unverified narratives and assures Nigerians that the government will conduct a fair and unbiased investigation, with findings communicated transparently. Human rights lawyer Femi Falana criticized the minister’s response, emphasizing that the payment contravened existing regulations.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) called for the immediate sacking and prosecution of the minister, alleging money laundering. Other groups, including the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project (SERAP), urged a thorough probe into the allegations. The Yoruba Youth Assembly called for the minister’s dismissal, emphasizing that government money should not be deposited into personal accounts.
The unfolding scandal raises concerns about accountability and transparency in poverty alleviation programs, with calls for stringent actions against those found culpable. The President’s directive signals a commitment to addressing the allegations and holding responsible parties accountable.
