In a tragic incident, a 10-year-old pupil identified as Rofiat lost her life after being struck by a car on the premises of Isiu Grammar School in the Ikorodu area of Lagos State. The incident occurred on Friday, September 29, and was confirmed by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin.
According to reports, Rofiat had joined her friends on the school playground as they prepared to conclude the school day. A vehicle, which had been parked by a teacher known as Dele some meters away, reportedly started rolling backward towards her direction. Unfortunately, Rofiat did not notice the oncoming Nissan car, which struck her.
A local resident explained, “The car had been parked there since morning when the teacher arrived. We don’t know how it managed to move from the position. Meanwhile, Rofiat was backing the moving vehicle. The moment the vehicle hit her, the impact made her hit her forehead on the ground. It was other students who rushed to call the teachers who came to the scene and found her motionless.”
Rofiat was immediately rushed to Isiotu General Hospital for medical attention. However, her condition worsened, and medical staff there referred her to Agbowa General Hospital. Tragically, she was confirmed dead after arriving at Agbowa and was taken to the emergency section.
Following the incident, police officers visited the school premises to document the scene and interview teachers who were present when it happened. The owner of the car was taken into custody after reporting the accident to the police.
This heartbreaking accident serves as a reminder of the importance of safety measures in school premises to prevent such tragic incidents from occurring.
