Trudeau Rejects Trump’s Idea of Canada as 51st State

Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has firmly dismissed former U.S. President Donald Trump’s suggestion to merge Canada into the United States as its 51st state. Trudeau called the proposal unrealistic and emphasized the importance of both nations maintaining their sovereignty while continuing their robust trade and security partnership.

“There isn’t a snowball’s chance in hell that Canada would become part of the United States,” Trudeau asserted on X, rejecting Trump’s repeated references to him as a “governor” and his threats of economic pressure. Trump, speaking from Florida, claimed the merger would enhance both economies and national security, while also criticizing Canada’s military capabilities and economic reliance on the U.S.

Trump’s comments have drawn sharp criticism from Canadian leaders, including Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre, who stated unequivocally, “Canada will never be the 51st state. Period.” Trudeau used the occasion to reaffirm Canada’s sovereignty and highlight the country’s strong yet independent ties with its southern neighbor.
