U.S. President Donald Trump has suspended HIV treatment funding for Nigeria and other developing nations under the President’s Emergency Plan for AIDS Relief (PEPFAR). The U.S. State Department announced that the funding will be halted for at least 90 days, except for emergency aid to Israel and Egypt.
State Department spokesperson Tammy Bruce stated that the U.S. would no longer provide financial aid without returns for the American people. The decision has raised global concerns, as PEPFAR, launched in 2003, has helped over 20.6 million people with a $6.5 billion annual budget.

The suspension follows Trump’s executive order on foreign aid issued on January 20, 2025. Health experts warn that this move could severely impact HIV/AIDS treatment and prevention efforts in affected countries.
