TUC Suspends Strike Pending Government Action

In the latest update from the Trade Union Congress (TUC), it was announced on Saturday that the suspension of their nationwide strike planned for October 1st is not a permanent decision. The TUC clarified that this suspension depends on the President Bola Tinubu-led administration fulfilling the commitments outlined in the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed by the Federal Government and Organized Labour.

In response to claims by governors that they might not implement the terms of the MoU, the TUC dismissed these concerns. They argued that the governors had already introduced measures to support state civil servants and residents before the MoU was agreed upon.

Tommy Etim, the National Deputy President of the Trade Union Congress, shared these insights during an interview in Abuja on Saturday.

As previously reported by Findwhosabi, the MoU, comprising 15 key points, was publicly disclosed on October 1, 2023.

Addressing the doubts about the governors’ commitment to the agreement, Etim stated, “That is not possible. Anyways, the truth is that we have reached out to our people in the states to meet with them. Letters have also been sent to that effect.”

When asked about the progress made with the government, the labor leader emphasized, “The 30-day ultimatum we gave to them is still in place. We have given them time, and we are sure they are working. What we did was just a suspension. When you suspend a strike, you can kickstart it without further notice. We have done our part and we are waiting for them to play their part.”
