“Uganda Police Thwart Church Bomb Attack”

Uganda’s police have successfully thwarted a potentially devastating bomb attack on the Rubaga Miracle Centre Cathedral in the capital city, Kampala. The incident unfolded when a man attempted to enter the cathedral grounds with an explosive device, prompting the evacuation of hundreds of worshippers. Police spokesman Patrick Onyango revealed that the improvised explosive device was made of nails, a motorcycle battery, a charger, and a telephone handset.

The police had acted on a tip-off about a potential attack on a place of worship, which led them to track the suspect. The suspect, identified as 28-year-old Ibrahim Kintu, was apprehended and found to be carrying the explosive device in his backpack.

Following the arrest, a controlled detonation of the device was carried out outside the cathedral. The police indicated that they were now pursuing three other individuals, as Kintu suggested he may have had accomplices.

The Rubaga Miracle Centre Cathedral was cordoned off, and bomb squad officers and sniffer dogs were deployed to ensure there were no further threats. Fortunately, no additional threats were detected.

Pastor Robert Kayanja, a prominent figure who leads the cathedral, expressed gratitude that they had been spared from a potential tragedy. He credited security personnel for their swift action in preventing the suspect from entering the church and detonating the bomb.

Kayanja, a public supporter of Uganda’s long-serving leader, Yoweri Museveni, addressed his congregation after prayer services resumed, emphasizing their survival and faith.

The incident follows earlier warnings received by the police regarding potential attacks on populated areas, including churches and shopping centers. It serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing security challenges faced by the nation, with militant groups like the Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) and Al-Shabaab posing threats to the safety of Ugandan citizens.
