Vandals Wreck Power Lines, Cut Electricity in Kaduna and Kano

Vandals have damaged two critical towers on the 330kV Shiroro–Kaduna transmission lines, triggering power outages across parts of Kaduna and Kano. The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN) confirmed that towers T133 and T136 sustained severe damage, leading to electricity disruptions in the North-West region. TCN reported that the problem became apparent when one line tripped, followed by the second, prompting the deployment of local vigilante groups to protect the area.

TCN spokesperson Ndidi Mbah described the incident as a deliberate act of vandalism, not routine damage. To manage the crisis, engineers implemented a temporary solution, diverting power through the 330kV Kaduna–Jos line to keep electricity flowing to affected regions. Meanwhile, TCN has deployed an emergency restoration system and initiated plans for the full reconstruction of the damaged towers. An aerial survey was conducted in collaboration with security agencies to assess the damage and prevent further attacks.

TCN Managing Director Sule Abdulaziz appealed to nearby communities to help safeguard power infrastructure, emphasizing that vandalism impacts everyone. He assured the public that efforts are underway to restore the towers and stabilize the power network. Security patrols and investigations will continue to prevent future incidents and bring those responsible to justice, as the disruption threatens to worsen the region’s electricity challenges.
