In a disturbing incident on Wednesday night, Bariga, Lagos, was engulfed in chaos as three rival cult groups clashed, resulting in five fatalities and numerous injuries. The violent encounter occurred amidst preparations for the groups’ annual celebration known as 7/7. Presently, one victim remains in critical condition, fighting for their life in a local hospital.
The escalating battle for supremacy began last week when each cult group announced their respective 7/7 programs, warning residents to stay indoors during nighttime. This series of conflicting directives has revealed the presence of three distinct cult factions vying for control in the area.
One resident, Wasiu, shared his firsthand account, stating that the cult groups would issue contradictory instructions, causing confusion among the populace. The situation took a sinister turn yesterday evening when the clashes escalated, with gunshots ringing out in the Idi-Aba area—an infamous hideout for notorious cultists and a hub for drug dealers.
The shooting spree spilled over to Akilo, Sungas, and Olorunkemi Street in Somolu, resulting in innocent bystanders sustaining various injuries. Fearing for their safety, residents sought refuge indoors, while those returning from work or travel scrambled to find cover. The violence persisted throughout the night, leaving the streets strewn with lifeless bodies. At least five individuals lost their lives, with three bodies recovered on the streets and the remaining casualties occurring within homes. Tragically, one person is currently in a coma at the hospital, with their family unable to afford the required deposit instructed by the medical facility.
In light of the looming threat, as some cultists have issued warnings of retaliatory attacks commencing today as part of their 7/7 celebration, the community implores Commissioner of Police, Mr. Idowu Owohunwa, to intervene promptly.
Meanwhile, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO), acknowledged the cult war and confirmed the occurrence of the attack. Contrary to initial reports, the police have officially stated that the number of casualties is three, not five.
