What To Do In A Sexless Marriage

At some point in a marriage, couples may notice a decline in their sexual activity due to the demands of life. Questions about what constitutes a healthy amount of sex and whether it should be a cause for concern arise, especially if the overall relationship remains loving. Studies indicate that the average married couple has sex about 58 times per year, or slightly more than once a week, a decrease from previous years. However, what is considered “normal” can vary widely among couples, and a lack of sex doesn’t necessarily indicate an impending divorce if both partners are otherwise satisfied.

Experts caution against unrealistic comparisons with other couples and emphasize that different individuals have different sexual needs and preferences. While some may feel unsatisfied with having sex three times a week, others might consider that frequency as desirable. It’s essential to remember that there’s no specific scientific number of how often a couple should have sex, as it depends on various factors.

Defining a marriage as “sexless” typically involves engaging in sexual intercourse less than 10 times a year. However, experts prefer not to assign a specific number, as sexual intimacy can manifest in various forms and is not solely limited to traditional genital contact. A sexless marriage may arise from a range of factors, including life stressors, physical changes, mental health issues, or relationship problems like resentment or boredom.

Despite a lack of research on the survival rate of sexless marriages, they don’t always lead to divorce. However, the absence of intimacy should be taken seriously, as it can lead to other relationship issues related to anger, isolation, or infidelity.

In a marriage without intimacy, some partners may become resigned to the situation, while others remain together for various reasons such as companionship, co-parenting, financial stability, or fear of change. It’s essential for partners to communicate openly about their needs and desires, and finding time to discuss the matter calmly is crucial. Fixing a sexless marriage requires effective communication and a willingness to be open about one’s feelings and desires.

While some marriages don’t necessarily need sex and are content without it, others may feel a stronger need for physical intimacy. It ultimately depends on the individual relationship and the preferences of the partners involved.

The bottom line is that communication is vital in any relationship. People may have different perceptions and attitudes towards sex, and it plays various roles in relationships, including bonding, expression, connection, intimacy, and feeling loved and desired. Ensuring open communication between partners helps to understand each other’s needs and maintain a healthy relationship.
