World Bank Approves $700m Loan for Nigeria

The World Bank has granted Nigeria a new loan of $700 million to support the Adolescent Girls Initiative for Learning and Empowerment program. This initiative aims to improve secondary education opportunities for girls in specific states.

The additional funding will expand the program from seven states to eleven additional states, broadening the scope to include out-of-school girls, married girls, and those with disabilities.

Nigeria faces a significant challenge with a large number of out-of-school children, particularly in the northern regions, where insecurity has disrupted education. The program has already made strides in increasing girls’ enrollment in secondary schools and renovating classrooms, providing scholarships, and improving school facilities.

The World Bank’s support is part of an effort to bridge gender gaps in education and empower girls, recognizing the importance of educating and providing skills to adolescent girls for the country’s development and economic prosperity.

This loan represents ongoing efforts to address educational challenges in Nigeria and promote the well-being and opportunities of its young population.
