4,000 Inmates Jailed for Unpaid Fines, Says Interior Minister

The Minister of Interior,

Tunji-Ojo, has revealed that there are currently more than 4,000 inmates in custodial centers across Nigeria who are unable to pay fines imposed on them by judges and magistrates. He expressed concern that over 70% of the total population in the country’s custodial centers are individuals awaiting trial. Tunji-Ojo emphasized that the utilization of non-custodial alternatives, as outlined in the Correctional Service Act, could significantly reduce the number of inmates in correctional facilities.

During a visit to his office in Abuja by the Ambassador of the European Union to Nigeria, Samuela Isopi, the minister discussed these pressing issues. He stated, “Over 70 percent of the 79,000 inmates are awaiting trial. We have over 4000 inmates in the facilities for their inability to pay various fines. We believe we can reduce the number of inmates in our correctional facilities by about forty percent if we explore non-custodial alternatives as provided for in the Correctional Service Act.”

Tunji-Ojo highlighted the potential for EU support in enhancing border management technology within Nigeria, stating that the EU’s role in Nigeria’s socio-economic development is crucial. He emphasized the importance of addressing crime and migration challenges in Nigeria, as they also impact the EU due to the shared boundaries between Africa and the EU.

The minister urged the EU to assist the Federal Government in conducting an audit of all correctional centers. He also discussed ongoing reforms, particularly in streamlining travel documentation processes and knowledge transfer. Tunji-Ojo stated that efforts were underway to simplify the international passport application and collection process while addressing identity theft concerns. The goal is to restore the reputation and integrity of Nigeria’s green passport.

Ambassador Samuela Isopi expressed the EU’s commitment to supporting Nigeria in managing illegal migration, combating human trafficking, and curbing people smuggling. The EU pledged technical support in addressing these challenges.
