Adewunmi Oriyomi Onanuga, fondly known as “Ijaya,” was a distinguished Nigerian politician, entrepreneur, and the Deputy Chief Whip of the House of Representatives until her untimely passing on January 15, 2025. Representing Ikenne/Sagamu/Remo North Federal Constituency in Ogun State, she was the sole female principal officer in Nigeria’s 10th National Assembly, leaving an indelible mark on the nation’s political landscape.
Born on December 2, 1965, in Hammersmith, London, Onanuga pursued her education with excellence, earning an MBA from the Business School of the Netherlands in 2013. Her career journey spanned roles in IT, media, and entrepreneurship before transitioning to politics in 2019 under the All Progressives Congress (APC). As a legislator, she championed social justice and human rights, notably advocating for a Federal Ministry of Senior Citizens Affairs to enhance welfare for the elderly.
Beyond politics, Onanuga was deeply connected to her roots, holding the revered title of Yeye Oba of Makun in Sagamu. Her dedication to her constituents, advocacy for gender inclusion, and impactful legislative initiatives have left a legacy of service, inspiring a new generation of leaders.
