FIFA has announced a controversial ban on refillable water bottles at stadiums during the 2026 World Cup, reversing an earlier policy that allowed fans to bring empty reusable bottles into match venues. The decision comes just days before the tournament begins in the United States, Canada and Mexico.
According to FIFA, the rule change was introduced for safety reasons, with officials stating that outside bottles could pose risks to players and spectators. The governing body said the ban will apply across all World Cup stadiums to ensure a consistent security standard.
To help supporters cope with hot weather conditions, FIFA said hydration stations, cooling tents and misting areas will be available around venues. However, the decision is expected to spark debate among fans who may face additional costs purchasing bottled water inside stadiums.
