Nigeria @ 63: No International Leaders Invited, Confirms FG

The Federal Government of Nigeria announced on Monday that it had not extended invitations to any world leaders for the upcoming 63rd independence anniversary celebration scheduled for October 1. The decision was made as part of the government’s commitment to holding a low-key celebration, according to George Akume, the Secretary to the Government of the Federation.

During a press conference in Abuja, Akume explained that the choice of a low-key celebration was in line with the present economic challenges faced by the country. He emphasized that economic times are tough and that this approach was not indicative of a lack of progress. Notably, the government had invited 53 world leaders for the presidential inauguration, but this event would not include such invitations.

The theme of the 63rd anniversary celebration is “Nigeria @ 63, Renewed Hope for Unity & Prosperity.” Akume highlighted the importance of unity and prosperity as key objectives for the nation, despite its diversity.

He also noted the significance of the anniversary, particularly in light of Nigeria’s unbroken democratic record since 1999 and its peaceful presidential transition process. Akume acknowledged the economic challenges faced by Nigerians, including the removal of the fuel subsidy and global economic downturn, and mentioned that the government is working on palliative measures to alleviate these difficulties.

The government’s Renewed Hope Agenda was outlined, focusing on areas such as food security, poverty eradication, security, economic growth, job creation, access to capital, rule of law, and anti-corruption efforts.

Several programs have been scheduled for the celebration, including an anniversary symposium/public lecture, a lecture at the National Mosque Conference Center, a Juma’at Prayer at the National Mosque, a presidential broadcast, an inter-denominational church service, and a military parade.

Akume concluded by calling on media professionals and patriots to support the government and collaborate to transform Nigeria into the nation of its citizens’ dreams. He urged the media to publicize the activities planned for the 63rd Independence anniversary.
