Sokoto State, Nigeria – October 1, 2023 – The Sokoto State chapter of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have announced their preparedness to participate in the nationwide strike recently declared by the national headquarters of the unions.
The state secretary of the labour union, Hamisu Hussaini, confirmed on Saturday that workers in Sokoto State have been effectively mobilized for the impending action. Speaking on behalf of the state chairman of the union, Abdullahi Aliyu Jungle, Hussaini asserted that both the NLC and TUC in Sokoto State are fully ready for the forthcoming strike.
“We have received notification for the strike action from the national headquarters of the union regarding the commencement of a total and indefinite strike by Tuesday,” Hussaini stated. “I can assure you that we have immediately started mobilizing our members in the state to join the strike until all our demands are met by the federal government.”
Hussaini further disclosed that the unions have informed their affiliates across the state to prepare for the strike. Additionally, a monitoring team has been established by the union to oversee events in all government offices throughout the state.
Reacting to the development, the assistant secretary of the National Union of Transport Workers in Sokoto State, who identified himself as Labaran, revealed that his members are awaiting directives from the national headquarters before taking action. He expressed the readiness of his members to participate in the strike as soon as the official memo is received from the union’s national headquarters in Abuja.
Meanwhile, the secretary of the NLC in Sokoto State revealed that union leaders held a meeting with several bank managers in the state to ensure full compliance with the proposed strike.
“We visited some of the banks yesterday, including Polaris Bank, where we informed the manager that the strike would be closely monitored by a special monitoring team,” he explained. “He assured us that once the bank receives the official memo, they will have no choice but to join us.”
The impending nationwide strike has garnered significant support from labor unions across various states, raising concerns about its potential impact on government operations and services in Nigeria.
