Soyinka Rejects Rivers Emergency, Calls for Constitutional Reform

Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has condemned the suspension of elected officials in Rivers State, saying it goes against the principles of federalism. This follows President Bola Tinubu’s decision to declare a state of emergency and appoint a sole administrator for six months.

Soyinka, in an interview, criticized the 1999 constitution, arguing that it gives too much power to the president. He called for a national discussion to amend the constitution and ensure true federalism. He believes that Nigeria’s system is too centralized and needs urgent restructuring.

He further stressed the need for a national conference to create a constitution by the people, saying the current system does not reflect Nigeria’s diverse society.
